Diving is such an unnatural activity, if you think about it. And I mean this not only in the sense of having to rely on so many mechanical contraptions to be able to fulfill the most basic functions that define us, but also in gaining an added spatial dimension that we were never born to have. Hovering mid-water, turning slow somersaults, flipping upside down and doing barrel spins... none natural to us, but somehow so graceful and fluid and instinctive that I immediately feel at home 30 metres underwater, deep in the blue. I forget I'm the alien in that instant.
