Flea Market in Homburg, Germany

I really love flea markets. Unfortunately I don't have much of an eye for spotting treasures, but I do like to imagine the stories there must be behind each item.

One of my best memories of Germany is of the sprawling Flohmarkt at Homburg, a good two hours by train away from the little town I stayed in back in 2010. As I remember it, we didn't manage to tour the entire area that afternoon, but I think the trip wound up being the catalyst that got me interested in antiques and vintage memorabilia.

European flea markets really are something else - so far I don't think there's anything on this scale or level of diversity in the region, but that doesn't stop me from visiting one in whichever country I visit, especially if I'm with my dad, who always has stories about anything I point out. I did see an antique diving helmet in Jakarta once though, that was pretty cool.

Plus sometimes there are the really inexplicable things, like a witch weather vane.

Looking at the things in my room, I don't think I own anything that would be of value to anyone else - but then again, if there is a place in the world for witch weather vanes, who am I to question myself?
