Seven Days in Iceland

European landscapes are generally pretty, but Iceland in particular is magical. I remember the first time I stepped out into the Icelandic sunshine and saw a rainbow arching over the sea. I'd never seen a rainbow from end to end like that before, and though it faded away in a matter of minutes, it was quickly replaced by another further down the road, and then another yet further away. When I look back I think that was the decisive moment I fell in love with Iceland.

Iceland is dramatic. The intensity of the colours, the vast open spaces, the soaring heights, sculptured waterfalls, alien terrain, and chilling temperatures -  all intertwined in a entrancing beauty. It really is like nothing else.

There were so many things I did for the first time there as well. Snorkelling in a drysuit; whale watching; seeing wild dolphins; hiking across a glacier; sitting on a rooftop wrapped in five layers of clothing and warming my hands around a cup of hot milk, then driving out to the middle of nowhere the following night to look for the Northern Lights; lying under the Milky Way and feeling the dome of the universe curve around me... no words nor photos do Iceland the justice it deserves.

I hope I eventually get to visit the country again, this time with that someone special :)
